Traveling Green Card Holders: Do NOT Sign Form I-407!
If you are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) traveling abroad, be aware: U.S. immigration officers at the airport or border may ask you to sign Form I-407, Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status.
Why You Should NEVER Sign It
Signing means you are voluntarily giving up your green card! Once signed, you lose your lawful permanent resident status immediately.
CBP officers cannot force you to sign. They may pressure you, but it’s your legal right to refuse.
Even if you’ve been away for a long time, you still have the right to defend your residency before an immigration judge.
Signing may prevent you from reclaiming your green card, even if you are legally eligible to keep it.
What to Do If They Ask You to Sign
Refuse to sign. Stay firm and do not let them pressure you.
Clearly state: “I do not wish to sign anything. I want to speak to an immigration attorney.”
If they insist, request a hearing before an immigration judge. This is your legal right!
Your green card is too valuable to give up so easily. Know your rights and stand your ground!
